In a remote and forgotten corner of the world is a forgotten nursing home with crumbling walls and shattered windows that hold a story of unimaginable suffering. This is no ordinary abandoned building—this is a site that time stood still in 2011, when the institution was evacuated in haste after it was discovered to be contaminated with radiation. What makes this story even more poignant is what happened after evacuation. Over 90 vulnerable residents were left behind and abandoned by a system that was meant to protect them. Many died through dehydration and starvation and exposure to cold, with their final hours marked by pain and abandonment. While touring this haunted site, we found harrowing reminiscences of those who perished there, including a bloodstain on a patient bed. Here is a story of a tragic site that is a stark reminder of human failure.
The Rise and Fall of the Nursing Home

The nursing home was initially a place of care and compassion, a hub that was designed to provide comfort and support to older and disabled residents. It was built in the 1970s and was a modestly built but properly equipped building with spacious rooms, a dining hall for shared meals, and a small medical ward. It was a sanctuary for decades for those who needed it most and provided them with a sense of community and safety Forgotten places in the world
But by the early 2000s things changed. There were rumors of underfunding and mismanagement and care quality declined. There was a chronic lack of personnel, and the home was unable to support all of its residents. Despite all this, the home was still open for business, doors still open to those with no place to go.
Later on in 2011, there was a disaster. An industrial incident in the vicinity released radioactive pollutants into nature and polluted the environment. The local nursing home was discovered to be unsafe and was directed to be evacuated.
The Evacuation: Abandonment and Chaos
The evacuation was to be orderly and swift, but it soon became chaotic. Emergency responders and staff were hampered by a lack of resources and planning and were unable to move the residents. In the confusion, more than 90 people were left behind—mostly residents with severe disabilities and older residents who were unable to move themselves.
What ensued was a tragedy that is unimaginable. Overwhelmed and under-prepared staff abandoned the center, and those that remained behind starved to death. With no food, no water, and no medical care, those vulnerable individuals slowly and excruciatingly died.
In the days and weeks that followed, several residents perished of exposure to cold, starvation, and dehydration. The center that was intended to be a place of care was reduced to a tomb with halls that rang with pain and despair.
Stepping into Abandoned Nursing Home

When we first arrived at the nursing home, you could feel the heaviness of its history. While the building still stood and seemed to be in decent structural shape, it was in deep decline. Windows were shattered, walls were water-stained and covered with mold and mildew, and there was a heavy scent of mold and decay in the air. It was a building that was holding its own breath, waiting for someone to uncover what it was hiding.
Stepping in, we were greeted by the eerie silence. The building stood still in time, residents’ belongings, medical equipment and furniture just as they were on evacuation day. It was as if residents were spirited away without a trace and a ghostly photo of their final days remained behind.
The Painful Discoveries
It was a poignant stroll through the nursing home. Every room was a tale, every object a testament to lives that were taken. In the dining room, plates and cutlery still sat on tables, waiting for a meal that would never come. In the medical ward, beds lined up in rows, sheets torn and frayed. Medical charts and bottles of medication littered the floor, a testament to the evacuation frenzy.
But it was in one of the patient beds that we found our sobering discovery. On a bed was a dark spot that had seeped into the mattress—a grim reminder of the person who perished there. It was a moment that left us standing in place, a stark and sobering reminder of humanity’s negligence.
The Stories of the Forgotten
We strolled through the nursing home and couldn’t help but wonder about those who lived and died there. Who were they? What was their story? With no clues to be discovered, we were left to recreate their lives based on what was left behind.
There was a collection of family photographs in one room whose smiling faces jumped out of dusty and worn photo albums. There was a letter on a bedside table in another room with words scribbled on it that served as a poignant reminder of what was lost. Such intimate and personal touches were a poignant contrast to what was to be witnessed in residents’ last days of pain and abandonment.
The human toll of abandonment.
The tragedy of this deserted nursing home is not that of a building alone; it is that of people—of hopes that were not fulfilled and of lives that were short-changed. It is that of a system that failed its most vulnerable citizens and left them to die in pain and loneliness.
There were calls for accountability after this tragedy that never came. The plant was closed and secluded, and its story was buried beneath layers of bureaucracy and complacency. There was no resolution for those whose loved ones perished there; there was no justice—only ongoing pain.
